about puma

Genesis Story

The German brothers Rudolf and Adolf Dassler founded PUMA in their parental home in Herzogenaurach in 1919. It was initially called the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brother’s Shoe Factory). Dassler spikes became a favorite among athletes in the Olympic Summer Games in Amsterdam,1928. The world-famous American athlete Jesse Owens made track history in the Olympic games of 1936 wearing Dassler spikes! The brand went international soon after athletes sporting their sneakers won 7 gold and five bronze medals and then broke two World and five Olympic records.

The Dassler brothers fell out 28 years after founding the company. Rudolf Dassler moved into another family building and started “Sportschuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler” (RUDA) with fourteen employees. The company started operations on 1st June 1948 and was registered as PUMA on 1st October 1948. In December, the full name of the company was updated to PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler.

Linking of Histories

PUMA grew by leaps and bounds, just like its name. The first PUMA football shoe ATOM was worn by several West Germany players in the 1st post world war match against Switzerland in 1950. The Germans won the game 1-0 thanks to the winning goal by Herbert Burdenski sporting the ATOM. This event seared the bond between the iconic brand and the world of sports. In 1952, they launched the SUPER ATOM, which introduced the concept of screw-in studs, made with experts such as Sepp Herberger, West Germany’s National Football coach. After that, there was no looking back for the brand that only grew in historical significance with a profoundly interconnected history with sports especially running and football, later gaining success in the arenas of tennis, golf, and formula one racing.

The Puma Logo and Famous Styles

The iconic “No one logo” featuring the Puma jumping over the upper right corner of the logo was patented in 1967 which has only undergone minute changes. In 1982 PUMA introduced the TORERO equipped with a highly flexible duo flex sole, inspired by a straw to support the natural movement of the foot. In 1991 they bought out the Turn It On running shoes with disc technology that boasted of being the world’s first laceless sports shoes with a set of internal wires for the perfect upper fit. In 1998 PUMA merged sports with fashion with the help of star designer Jill Sanders. This helped bring the brand to everyone and reinvent itself as fashionable streetwear. The Mostro, introduced in 1999 with its spiked sole and touch fastener became the perfect mix of fashion, lifestyle, and sports. It was worn by none other than Madonna in her 2002 tour, making it a phenomenal trendsetter across the globe. PUMA has also partnered with Ferrari to develop official footwear, apparel, and accessories. The world’s fastest man Usain Bolt set most of his many world records wearing PUMA running shoes. In 2018 they signed on the Korean Pop group BTS as global ambassadors, genuinely establishing a worldwide connection.

STREETWEAR

Streetwear is a term for casual clothing that became global in the 1990s. It all started in New York where fashion was influenced by hip-hop culture and skateboarders. The term quickly spread from New York to the rest of the world. Streetwear includes anything casual and comfortable, like baggy denim jeans, caps and sneakers. Streetwear style is constantly evolving and developing. In the past couple of years, 90s fashion has started to become trendy again and that decade is having a big influence on streetwear styles. The hype for trendy sneakers and the baggy jeans look is back – at least until the next trend comes along.
