about nike

Humble Beginnings

Nike, today one of the largest suppliers of athletic shoes and apparel, had very modest beginnings in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports. It was founded by Bill Bowerman, a track and field coach at the University of Oregon, and his former student Phil Knight (author of Shoe Dog). The company was rebranded and renamed Nike Inc. in 1971, celebrating the Greek Goddess of Victory Nike. This happened seemingly after an employee Jeff Johnson had a dream about the goddess. The initial plan was to name the company Dimension Six. Nike’s now iconic swoosh logo was designed by Portland State University student and illustrator Carolyn Davidson for a mere 35 dollars! She was also given 500 shares of stock by Knight, which today would probably amount to $1 million.

The Rise of Nike

In 1971 Nike introduced the Nike Cortez and Waffle design, which was a giant hit. Since then, the company has grown in leaps and bounds. Some of the brand’s most exemplary moments were the “Just Do It” ad campaign in 1988 and the signing of big sports stars such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and the late Kobe Bryant. The introduction of the patented ‘Air’ technology with the Tailwind shoe in 1979 are two other major achievements that put Nike on the world map. Nike was also very innovative with regard to advertisements! It was the first-ever brand to adopt ‘The Beatles’ music in an ad campaign in 1987, releasing an ad for Air Max to “Revolution,” and for an ad campaign in 2018 featuring athlete and political activist Colin Kaepernick.

Nike’s many Acquisitions and iconic styles

Apart from its brand name, Nike also sells its products under Nike Pro, Nike+, Nike Golf, Nike Blazers, Air Jordan, Air Max as well as subsidiaries including Jordan, Hurley Int. and Converse Inc. Nike had generated around $16.1 billion in FY 2019 from the United States market and close to $14.6 billion in 2020 selling athletic footwear, apparel, accessories, and equipment.

Some of Nike’s most essential sneakers are the Cortez, forever imprinted in our minds by Tom Hanks in the movie Forest Gump. The Dunk, which has been popular since 1985 and is considered a collectible today. The Air Max is the most popular Nike shoe in existence with a day, i.e., the 26th of March, dedicated to it. The Air Huarache, a light hi-tech running shoe, is extremely popular with teenagers. The Blazer holds excellent value for its vintage feel designed as skating shoes with extra-large swooshes to make the sneakers more noticeable.  The Air Force 1, popular as sports and streetwear, was designed like Hiking shoes with a thick sole and ankle sole touted to prevent injuries. The Air Jordan 1 is one of Nike’s most popular and iconic designs, which redefined the sporty streetwear style. It has famous fans such as Jay Z, Kanye West, Roger Federer, etc., who have often been wearing it. The Dunk SB, released as skater sneakers, has a firm grip and hard toes, became popular with both skaters and non-skaters thanks to its comfortable fit and stylish design that goes with everything. SB Bruin High was made exclusively for female skaters with a sculptured fit that made it immensely popular. It was created with insights from famous skaters such as Lacey Baker, Leticia Bufoni, and Josie Millard and comes in multiple colors making the shoe a huge success. The Air VaporMax is one of the brand’s groundbreaking sneakers that took seven years to complete, containing over 39,000 components. The shoe includes a fly-knit upper with brilliantly placed air units at the bubble sole to feel almost weightless.

STREETWEAR

Streetwear is a term for casual clothing that became global in the 1990s. It all started in New York where fashion was influenced by hip-hop culture and skateboarders. The term quickly spread from New York to the rest of the world. Streetwear includes anything casual and comfortable, like baggy denim jeans, caps and sneakers. Streetwear style is constantly evolving and developing. In the past couple of years, 90s fashion has started to become trendy again and that decade is having a big influence on streetwear styles. The hype for trendy sneakers and the baggy jeans look is back – at least until the next trend comes along.
